20 Strategies for Developing Strong Academic Writing Habits

Basic Strategies for Building Disciplined Academic Writing

1- Set measurable writing goals

Your writing objectives could include a specific word count, sections of the writing project (such as the introduction, body, and conclusion), or stages of the writing process. Don’t stop writing for the day until you’ve accomplished your goal. We recommend breaking a large goal, such as finishing a research paper, into smaller goals. Each small goal helps you get closer to your ultimate goal.

2- Consider writing a great paper

4- Set a timer to help you focus

Decide a specific amount of time to focus solely on the writing you need to do. Don’t stop working on your essay or paper until the timer is up. This keeps you from being distracted by social media, texts, or anything else. For an academic writing project, I set a timer for 50 minutes followed by a 10-minute break.  I write again for 50 minutes before taking a 30-minute break.

Test different sets of writing times and breaks to see what works best for you. Francesco Cirillo developed one of the most well-known timing methods, the Pomodoro Technique.  To try this technique, set a timer for 25 minutes, then take a 5 to 6 min break.

Repeat the cycle three more times. Then take a 15–20-minute break. Continue doing this until you’ve completed your writing for the day.

5- Develop a writing habit

A habit includes three elements: the trigger, action, and reward. Find something that will inspire you to write and make it your habit. Then write. When you are done writing, then reward yourself.

Take this as an example. Opening my laptop and going to my MS Word document serves to be my writing trigger. I keep that Word document open every night so it’s the very first thing I see in the morning. I see it and right off, begin to write. After which, I treat myself to a hot black coffee.

Just choose your habit of writing, and start practising it every day until you get into a smooth rhythm of developing it.

6- Remove all distractions

Silence your cell phone, turn off your email notifications, avoid social media, and tell anyone who lives with you not to bother you (unless there is an emergency). Find an area where you can concentrate and write.

Try different places until you find the right one for you. Most student’s favourite place is a library because they are not alone and everyone else is quiet.

7- Write something every day

Whatever you choose, any type of writing will help you improve your ability to express yourself in words. Here are some daily writing prompts: journal entries, blog posts, freewriting exercises, and summaries or responses to what you’ve read or learnt in class.

When you write every day, you increase your vocabulary and improve your writing style. You also improve critical thinking and writing skills.

8- Write hot and edit cold

This expression indicates that you should write a draft without stopping to correct or change anything. A first draft is referred to as a rough draft (or ugly first draft) because it is messy and requires extensive revision and editing.

When you’ve finished the first draft, take a break. Students usually wait a day before revising and editing my academic writing. When revising and editing, imagine that it is someone else’s paper. Remove, edit, and rewrite anything that does not make sense. Be cold, calculated, and unafraid to make significant changes to your writing.

9- Get feedback and suggestions for your academic writing

If you’re working in a peer-revision group, ask others what they like about your paper, what they find unclear or confusing, and what questions they have about your writing.
